Remote Desktop Without Internet: LAN-Only Options Compared
The presentation PC is at the podium, you're at the AV desk, and the venue internet is either down, blocked or nonexistent. You don't need the cloud to control a computer twenty meters away — here's what works on a pure local network.
Why your usual remote tool fails backstage
Consumer remote-access tools are built around cloud brokering: both machines phone the vendor's servers, which then relay or negotiate the session. That design is why they "just work" across the world — and why they fail in a venue where:
- there is no internet drop at all (common backstage and in temporary venues),
- corporate IT blocks remote-access services entirely,
- or hundreds of attendees have flattened the Wi-Fi.
Meanwhile the two computers you care about are on the same switch, one hop apart. A LAN-only tool makes that hop directly.
Option 1 — VNC
VNC variants are the classic answer: free, LAN-capable, cross-platform. The cost is setup friction — installing server and viewer, setting passwords, finding IP addresses, opening firewall ports — and performance tuning is often manual. Perfectly workable if you're comfortable doing IT; clumsy at 7 a.m. on show day with borrowed laptops.
Option 2 — Windows Remote Desktop (RDP)
RDP is built into Windows and fast, but it has a dealbreaker for AV work: connecting takes over the remote session and locks its screen. The podium display goes to the lock screen the moment you connect — the opposite of what you want during a show. It also requires Pro editions on the host and manual IP/firewall handling.
Option 3 — CueRemote (LAN-native, built for events)

Yes — same LAN segment (same router/switch). A travel router or even a direct Ethernet cable between two PCs is enough; no internet uplink is needed.
