1. Overview

EventSpin is a web-based random draw tool for live events. No software to install on any device — the host opens a browser, the audience joins from their own phones, and the winner is revealed live on a projector screen.

Three browser screens cover every role:

Tip: EventSpin works entirely over the internet — the host, attendees, and projector can all be on different networks. A shared Wi-Fi is not required.

2. Getting Started

Subscription & Login

  1. Purchase an EventSpin subscription from the Cue Congress website. You will receive a license key by email.
  2. Open cuecongress.com/eventspin/host.html in a desktop browser (Chrome or Firefox recommended).
  3. Enter your license key when prompted and click Activate. The key is stored locally in your browser — you will only need to enter it once per device.
  4. Enter a Room Code (4–8 letters/numbers) or accept the generated one. This creates your session room. Share the room code or join link with attendees.

Typical Event Setup

Host laptop Open host.html in a browser. This is your control panel for the entire draw.
Projector PC Open spotlight.html with the same room code and switch the window to fullscreen (F11). Connect to the projector.
Attendees Scan the QR code on the Spotlight screen, or click Copy Join Link on the host screen and send it out.

3. Host Screen

The host screen is divided into two panels:

The header shows the room code, a Copy Join Link shortcut, a button to open the Spotlight screen in a new tab, ⏏ License to deactivate this device's license, and ✕ Close to leave the room on this device.

Note: the first device to open a room becomes its authorized host. A second device trying to control the same room (spin, clear, change settings) will see "This room is already controlled by another host device" and can only watch, not control it. To hand control to another device, close the room on the original device first.

4. Adding Names

There are three ways to build the pool of names for a draw:

Add One at a Time

Type a name into the Add a name… field and press Enter or click + Add.

Bulk Import

  1. Paste a list of names into the bulk import box — separate them with commas or new lines.
  2. Click Add all. Up to 300 names are added per paste.

Let Attendees Join Themselves

Share the join link or QR code. Attendees type their own name on the Join page and are added automatically — no host action required.

Duplicate Names

Manually added names (via Add or Bulk Import) are rejected if an identical name is already in the pool. When an attendee self-joins with a name that's already present, EventSpin automatically appends a number instead of rejecting them — for example a second "John Smith" joins as "John Smith 2" — since many attendees on the same venue Wi-Fi can share a name.

Removing Names

Click the next to any name to remove it individually, or 🗑 Clear all to wipe the entire pool and winners history and start fresh.

Note: Clear all cannot be undone.

5. Running a Draw

Choose a visual mode before spinning — it's shown live on the Spotlight screen:

Spinning

  1. Make sure at least 2 names are in the pool — the Spin button is disabled otherwise.
  2. Click SPIN. A 3-2-1 countdown plays on both the host button and the Spotlight screen.
  3. The winner is drawn and the animation plays out on Spotlight. The name stays blurred on the host screen until Spotlight has revealed it, to keep the surprise for the room.
  4. Once revealed, click ✓ Next Round to log the winner to history and continue (removing them from the pool if Raffle Mode is on), or ↺ Undo to dismiss the result without confirming — the name stays in the pool either way you choose Undo.
Tip: Set the Event title in Settings to show your event's name on the Spotlight idle screen.

6. Raffle Mode

When Raffle mode is on (Settings), confirming a winner with Next Round removes them from the pool — so every spin picks a new person and nobody can win twice.

Turn Raffle mode off if you want the same pool available for every spin (for example, a repeating "spin to decide who goes next" use case where a person can be picked again).

7. Spotlight Display

Spotlight is a projector-optimised full-screen display. Open it on the PC connected to the projector, enter the same room code, and press F11 for fullscreen.

What Spotlight Shows

8. Attendee Join Page

Attendees open the join link (or scan the QR code shown on Spotlight) and type their name to be added to the draw. No account or app download is required.

9. Settings

All settings live in the right-hand panel of the host screen and apply live to the Spotlight screen — no reload needed.

10. Troubleshooting

Attendees Can't Join

"This room is already controlled by another host device"

Only the first device to open a room can control it (spin, clear, change settings). If you need to switch host devices, close the room on the original device, or open a different room code on the new device.

License Key Not Accepted

Logged Out Unexpectedly

EventSpin stores its activation in your browser's localStorage. Clearing browser data or using Private/Incognito mode will remove the stored key. Re-enter your license key to reactivate.

Spin Button Is Disabled

The pool needs at least 2 names before you can spin. Add more names or wait for attendees to join.
